Brewing Guide

Brewing great coffee at home is easy as long as a few simple instructions are observed.

First, a couple of ground rules:

  • Buy good coffee that is freshly roasted.
  • Use a good grinder (preferably a burr grinder).
  • Brewing water should be heated to 195-205 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The ideal ratio of coffee to water is 1.63 grams coffee to one fluid oz (30 ml) water or one ounce coffee to 16 fluid ounces water. This typically translates to around two tablespoons of ground coffee to six fluid ounces water.

Press Pot Directions:

  1. Measure coffee and grind coarsely.
  2. Add ground coffee to press pot.
  3. Steadily pour water into the pot in a way that evenly saturates the grounds and gently stir.
  4. Put filter and lid on pot and start timer.
  5. After four minutes of brewing, slowly push down the filter to force the coffee grounds to the bottom. You should feel a little–but not too much–resistance.
  6. Pour and enjoy.

Manual Pour Over Directions:

  1. Place filter inside filter holder.
  2. Rest filter holder on cup or pitcher.
  3. Measure and grind medium fine.
  4. Add ground coffee to filter.
  5. Pour water slowly in a way that saturates all grounds.
  6. Sit back and watch the dripping action.
  7. Enjoy.
